Reverse and Restore

Devices are a regular fixture in our lives, and while they bring us many obvious benefits, they can also bring us some physical problems. We either sit at a computer hunched over all day or walk around hunched over a phone. In the short term we end up with pain in our neck, shoulders and back, and in the longer term our posture is affected.

It is not all doom and gloom, though! While it is difficult to maintain perfect posture 100% of the time, there are some simple poses we can do to reverse "screen posture" and restore our correct positioning. Our kids’ device usage is also increasing rapidly, and they will benefit from these poses as well.

Each of these poses are versions of backbends that will open the shoulders with the purpose of offsetting our hunched over posture. We don’t have to do a full yoga class to take advantage of the benefits yoga can bring us. We can take literally a minute to apply some basic yoga concepts and feel better. Here are 3 basic poses to easily fit into your day. Pick one and give it a try!

Pose 1:

Stand up.

Straighten your spine.

Open your arms up with your palms facing forward as though you are going to give someone a big hug.

Gently lean back for a small backbend.

Pose 2:

Stand up.

Straighten your spine.

Take your hands to your hips.

Draw your shoulders back and down.

Gently lean back for a small backbend.

Pose 3:

Stand up.

Straighten your spine.

Take your arms behind you, clasp your hands together, and clasp your palms together for a bit more opening.

Draw your shoulders back and down.

Gently lean back for a small backbend.

Anytime you start to feel stiff and in need of a refresh, these simple poses are certain to make you and your kids feel just a bit better, and refresh and restore your bodies.
